Median and Mean Earnings by Sex
Median earnings illustrates the point where the earnings of half the individuals exceed this level and the other half have earnings below this level. Mean earnings, however, are calculated as a weighted average. The relationship between median and mode is one that illustrates skewness in the data. Here the mean earnings are awlays less than the median earnings. This is indicative of a positive skew where there are a large concentration of individuals earning a relatively low income. These data also indicate that females earn less than males in all regions and at all levels of aggregation. These patterns often result in result in sex-based income inequality. It is important to mention, these patterns can arise with benign things or can be indicative of more troubling things such as discrimination. Pay gaps between the sexes are well documented and result in income inequality.
