This measure captures the proportion of the existing business establishments with predetermined numbers of employees. Establishments are defined by the US Census Bureau to be a single physical location where business is conducted or where services or industrial operations are performed. Establishments with fewer employees can serve as a proxy for self-employment. Entrepreneurial activity, however, is much more complex according to J.A. Schumpeter (1934).
